“And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” ‒Luke 11:9-10 (NLT)
When I was little and heard grown-ups talk about these verses, I imagined a genie granting wishes. You only had to ask and you received! What could be better than that?!?
As I grew older and my “wishes” (what I thought was prayer) weren’t answered or granted, I wondered if all the things I learned about God were really true. If He doesn’t answer my prayers, is He really even listening? Is He even there? I remember wondering if I should even bother to pray during some rough times in high school.
In college, I started to gain more understanding about prayer. God can discern our passion about our prayers, and He wants our whole hearts and faith poured into what we ask of Him! I also began to focus more on the “keep on” verbs. In other words, we shouldn’t stop praying or give up just because we don’t think we’re getting answers. God’s always working and He wants us to keep asking for things when the Spirit leads.
I’m so guilty of giving up on prayers…not intentionally, but my brain forgets and after a week or two, that prayer disappears into the Memory Dump (like those shiny colored balls from the Inside Out movie). To help, I keep a journal beside my bed where I write names and situations to pray for.
Having faith and a humble spirit gets us an audience with the King of Kings! Trusting that He knows what’s best for us and remembering all the other times He has answered remind me to continue to be faithful and persistent in my prayers. For what prayers do you need to “keep on knocking?”
