“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him for he cares for you.” ‒ 1 Peter 5: 6-7 (NKJV)
I grew up in a nonreligious household, so church wasn’t a familiar experience. I only started going to church every Sunday when I was in boot camp and learned that church-goers got out of Sunday chores.
Fast forward several years. I went back to church the first Sunday after separating from my now ex-wife. I sat by myself in the back of the church. Toward the end of the sermon, the pastor said something that I have never forgotten: “God wants you to be humble. If you don’t find humility, He will humiliate you.” I obviously felt humiliated at that point of my life, but that message was what I needed to hear to lean into Jesus. While I called myself a Christian years before this day, this was the day I really started my walk with Jesus.
How many times has pride got in the way of hearing what the Lord has planned for you? What would your relationship with Christ look like with more humility? If you struggle with humility, will you wait to be humiliated to be humble?
