Barbara Carr is a military wife and mother of three children - Ian, Sam and Emma. Her husband is currently working at the Pentagon. As a result, the family will be staying in the area for quite some time- a real treat for them. The Carr family is a member of Chantilly Bible Church. Barbara has dual bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Special Education from Missouri Southern State University. She taught for four years before deciding to stay home with her children. She has been homeschooling for 7 years. She tends to teach writing where ever she goes. Some writing courses that she has taught, beside IEW, in the past are: Music as My Muse (1st/2nd Grade), Young Author’s ( 4th and 5th Grade), Beginning poetry ( 3rd and 4th Grade). She tutors language arts when she can find the time. Teaching is her joy.
Charlotte Attaway is wife to William and mother of Erin, 6, and Allison, 3. She holds a B.A. in Foreign Languages from Mississippi State University and an M.A. in French from the same institution. After working for Disneyland Paris, Charlotte taught French at the high school and college level for 7 years before starting a family in 2004. She says, "I believe my strength lies in understanding how the grammar fits together and being able to explain that to students, no matter their background in grammar. I teach them not to memorize sentences or phrases but how to put the pieces of the puzzle together themselves in endless combinations."
Chris Padon is the father of two children, Noah and Halle, and husband to Ellen. Chris will be teaching our beginning guitar class. He has been playing the guitar for 26 years. Chris and his family attend Harvest Christian Fellowship in Reston, VA.
Deena Hugel is a mother of 3 boys, ages 27, 20, and 10. She has been homeschooling, by the Grace and guidance of God, for 12 years. She is also wife to David. She and her husband attend New Hope Church in Lorton, Virginia, and have been couples group leaders for 11 years. David is also Director of Worship there. Deena has been involved in youth ministry for 14 years.
Gracie Yu is the mother of 4 children, ages 2 to 12, and wife to Sounil. She has homeschooled for the last 8 years and continues to be stretched in this endeavor. She will be teaching the Apologia Physical Science class for the upcoming school year. She has a B.A. in English from UCLA and a Masters in Health Sciences from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Prior to staying home to raise her children, she worked for the Family Research Council as a health policy analyst. She is active at McLean Bible Church and enjoys singing, piano, and volleyball.
Jacki Wallo is mother to four children ages 2 to 8, and wife to their fearless leader, Andy. She has homeschooled the children from the beginning and joined the Growing in Grace Co-op in 2010. Her education is in Political Science and Spanish from Olivet Nazarene University and a Law degree from Catholic University Law School in Washington, DC. She owned and managed a Real Estate Brokerage before settling down to homeschool the children. Jacki currently directs the children's ministry at Kings Gate Community Church and is a leader in the American Heritage Girls Troop 711. She enjoys hiking, camping, the beach, swing dancing, reading, volleyball, jewlery making and politics.
Lori Mazur has been homeschooling for 9 years. She and her husband, Mark, have 3 children after 13 years of marriage. Lori graduated from The George Washington University with a Bachelors of Accountancy. She is a “retired” CPA. Over the years Lori has served her church in various positions to include hospitality, Good $ense Ministry leader, women’s small group leader, AWANA leader, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school teacher for children with special needs. Lori enjoys scrapbooking, reading, hiking, archery and drinking tea.
Maria Brown has enjoyed homeschooling for the past two years. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from James Madison University, and is certified to teach art (kindergarten through high school). She has twenty one years of teaching experience in the public schools. In the past she has taught children’s Sunday School, volunteered in the Cub Scouts, and has been on several missions trips. She is married to Mark and they attend Cherrydale Baptist Church in Arlington, VA. She likes to read historical fiction and biographies.
Nancy Kantsios is the mother of two, a 14 year old girl and a 10 year old boy. She has enjoyed homeschooling her children from the time they entered into Kindergarten. Nancy has been married to George for 18 wonderful years. Homeschooling is truly a calling for her and brings such joy to her life. She is convinced that raising up the next generation to love and serve the Lord is the most important thing that we do as parents. Nancy has a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine/Pre-Physical Therapy, with minors in science, math, and psychology. She currently is serving at her church, Southview Community Church, on the worship team, co-leading the teenage girls small group bible study, and co-chairs leadership of the Growing in Grace Co-op. She enjoys many hobbies including skiing, reading, interior decorating, and flower gardening.
Polly Dombroski is a mom of 2 boys, one a senior at VCU and the other home schooled in 3/4th grade. She was trained as a social worker in the early 80's, obtained her LCSW in 1984 and her career spanned 12 years working in many areas of social work, finally finishing as a clinician doing group and individual therapy. After the birth of her second child, she has given up her career and works part time as a preschool teacher while home schooling her last child. She first took ASL classes associated with the church she was attending in Md. over 15 years ago. She used ASL for augmenting worship song and dance for nearly 12 years. She is not a licensed interpreter, but knows enough to translate songs and conversational communication. She also minored in Spanish in college and is well able to converse in Spanish.
William Attaway became the third senior pastor of Southview Community Church in 2006. Prior to coming to Southview as the associate pastor in 2004, he served as a staff minister at North Richland Hills Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as churches in Mississippi and Alabama. Pastor William is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He is a graduate of William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS (B.A. in Religion) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX (M.A. in Theology). His seminary studies focused primarily in the areas of Old Testament and Hebrew studies. William and his wife Charlotte were married in 1997, and they have two daughters: Erin, born in 2004, and Allison, born in 2007.
In previous ministry settings, Pastor William has most enjoyed developing programs for leadership training. He believes and tries to model that a pastor's job is not to do everything himself, but to "equip the saints for the work of service". Pastor William's primary spiritual gifts are teaching and administration. He enjoys reading, traveling, playing golf, and working with computers. He also teaches New Testament Survey for Itawamba Community College’s distance learning program. The Attaways homeschool their daughters, striving to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. His favorite verse of Scripture is Romans 8:31 - "What then shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?"
